Non-diagnostic literacy and phonology screenings

A screening from a very highly qualified and experienced specialist might be just what you need if:

  • you'd like to know if you/your child might have some signs of dyslexia without committing to the cost of a full diagnostic assessment, and/or

  • you're looking for a screening that's more robust than a basic computerised screening, and/or

  • you have a 7 year old and would like to know if they might benefit from a full diagnostic assessment once they turn 8

How long does the screening take and what does it involve?

Please read the page HERE about what happens on the day.

Before the appointment, you'll be asked to complete a short form; schools/colleges will not need to complete any paperwork.

The screening with brief feedback takes up to 1 hour and includes standardised tests of untimed word reading skills, timed word reading skills, timed sounding out of nonwords, spelling, phonological awareness, phonological memory and phonological processing speed. These are the key diagnostic features of dyslexia.

Afterwards, you'll receive a short but practical report that gives a record of the scores, an explanation about what these scores mean, generic strategies and advice about whether a full diagnostic assessment would be advisable at some point in the future. You'll be advised what the earliest date would be for a full diagnostic assessment as all standardised tests have a window during which repeating them would compromise the reliability of the scores. If you go on to book with me again, you'll receive a slight discount off the cost of a full diagnostic assessment.

How much is the screening and when do I pay?

The cost is £200. There is no deposit to be paid but full payment is kindly asked for either before or on the screening date via cash, BACS, credit/debit card or cheque.

Whilst there's often quite a long wait for a full diagnostic assessment due to how long the assessment and report writing take, these quick screenings are usually fairly quick to schedule and conduct, typically within 2-3 weeks unless I'm on leave. I assess daytime and evening Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, including after school unless your child would be too tired.

Bookings are made manually and therefore not through my online booking system. To book, please call me on 01342 714065. Otherwise, please share your details using the contact page on this website or email me at [email protected] so that I can phone you.
